6/3 - 6/4 Week 39 Blast for Educators
I’ve been reflective these last couple of weeks on the feeling of community and closure. As this year started, I knew I had a year to accomplish some important things. Much of that was a lasting knowledge of the philosophical grounding of the “why” and the “how”. This reflection of the “why” and “how” has recently helped me feel confident that the community of staff, students, parents, community organizations will continue to build the school in her namesake: June Jordan. As someone who has had the privilege to carry her spirit and work through the leadership of a school community these last seven years, I know from experience that this work is hard and rewarding and that you will get out of it what you put into the work. For me, the work has been to create a community that one day will educate and birth the folks who will create the “World that Doesn’t Exist Yet”. Only if we truly stretch our own imaginations, can we begin to comprehend what that world could look and feel like. Sometimes we look so hard to see the enemy in our external world, we forget to work on the internal enemy; self-doubt, self-worth, self-love, and compassion. Our community’s fight is to educate students successfully in a world that is not set up for their success. In order to do that, you will need to continue to work together for the sake of our young people. We need to be open, communicate, be clear and precise about our thoughts and our plans. We need to work hard and be okay with our own mistakes and truly develop the art of praxis to make things even better the next time. I have hope, confidence, and excitement that the next generation of JJSE staff will take our community and school towards that “World that Doesn’t Exist Yet”. In hope, love and light.
and from the words of June Jordan…
