Ms. Savannah Shange

About
For her undergraduate study, Ms. Shange went to Tisch School of the Arts at New York University and trained at the Experimental Theatre Wing, where she earned a BFA in Acting. After her theater training, Ms. Shange was part of the Urban Teacher Training Collaborative in Boston, where she taught Humanities at the acclaimed Boston Arts Academy and earned her Master's in Teaching from Tufts University. Before teaching at JJSE, Ms. Shange was an Advisor at MetWest High School in Oakland. During the summer, Ms. Shange enjoys traveling the world and teaching English to Upward Bound students at Mills College.
Ms. Shange also has a secret life as an actor, most recently in Intersection for the Arts' production of A Place to Stand (check out the Chronicle review at http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2007/03/06/DDGFOOEIJP1.DTL). She is proud to serve the people as a teacher and program coordinator here at the June Jordan School for Equity. In addition to working with young people and old bureaucracies, Ms. Shange is a great fan of baking cupcakes, walking it out, arguing about race in America, and sleep. By the way, while trees are pretty and fresh air is nice, Ms. Shange's true love will always be the city itself - concrete, blood, and handmade beauty.
By the way, the image above was taken in the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans, a few months after Hurricane Katrina. I had the honor to be able to travel to Louisiana during Winter Break 2005 to do relief work.
