Mentoring Youth in Community Action
Mentoring Youth in Community Action (MYCA) is a new intensive program that pairs a social justice seminar course with a full day project-based internship at a social change organization. 11th and 12th graders may apply to participate in MYCA, and they can present their project to fulfill the Community Action Masterpiece towards graduation.
As part of their MYCA experience, students will develop and implement a community action project. They will gain first-hand knowledge of what it takes to complete a project cycle, from the stages of planning and action through to reflection and assessment. The MYCA interns help community-based organizations address real issues.
Every MYCA intern is also enrolled in a class at JJSE designed to support their work off-site. In between each Wednesday they come to work, MYCA interns will have two seminars sessions focusing on the bigger picture of social change. The goal of the MYCA course is to give young people a context for the work they are doing at their internship, as well as practical support for their action projects. Ultimately, the course is designed to equip students with the historical knowledge and first-hand experience to develop their own theory of social change that can them help guide them in their growth as an engaged community member.
